Introduction

The Name

The name "Lumtin" is an English derivation of the Chinese name of my ancestor, Lum Den.

Lum Den's name means "continuous rain and electricity /lightning" in Cantonese and his brother, Lum Tin's name, means "continuous rain and sky / heaven". It appears that Lum Den adopted his brother's name perhaps to honour him for a particular deed he did, thus fulfilling his filial duty according to Confucian customs.

And that's why he named his son Charles LUM TIN.

The family's roots

The earliest Lumtin ancestor that I have found so far is Who Chumm, who was born in 1817 in Canton, China. It is not known whether Who Chumm ever went to Australia. His son, Lum Den sailed there in the 1860's, settling around the western NSW gold fields.

Our Convicts

There are eight confirmed convicts in the Lumtin branch of the family.

Bridget Spencer/ Thomas Staines / William Dawes / George Lewis / John Randall / Susannah Ravenscroft / William Hampton / Mary McQuade

Mark of a Convict

According to the 1837 Muster of Convicts, Thomas Staines was 5'5", of sallow & freckled complexion, with brown hair and dark grey eyes. He had a small mole on the back of the upper part of his right arm, a round scar on his left shin and the top of the little finger of both his hands was crooked.

The crooked little fingers are apparently a genetic defect. Direct descendants of Thomas Staines have the same defect - the mark of a convict?
