What's in a Name?

It was common practice for convicts to modify the spelling of their surnames or for their names to be incorrectly recorded in government records when they arrived in Australia.

Two examples of this are John Mitten (Perry line), who was convicted in 1790 as John Mitton, and Thomas Staines (Lumtin line), who was convicted and transported in 1836 as Thomas Steanes.
